Samsonov Vampire attack helicopter
3ds max, Photoshop
September 2008

This was supposed to be a splash page in an issue of The Red Star (Sword of Lies 2, for those of you familiar with the series), but we ended up not having enough space to use it. Even extra-thick comic books end up running out of pages pretty often.

Anyway, the "Samsonov Vampire" is a fictional attack helicopter I designed with direction from Chris Gossett, creator of The Red Star. It was a prominent "hero vehicle" in two issues of The Red Star. You can guess it's parentage from looking at it. The nose isn't so enormously long, I just used a violent camera lens to render it.

Fun trivia - praised by Jim Cameron when he spotted it while visiting Weta in NZ (the helicopter design & model, not this particular image). Alas, I wasn't there, but I did get a kick hearing about it from Chris.

Modeler in 3D Studio Max, Photoshop Textures, post & effects in Photoshop.
